MOTOR
O motor do hoverboard é um motor DC sem escovas que normalmente tem potência nominal entre 250–500 watts. É composto por um estator (parte estacionária) e um rotor (parte rotativa) que possui ímãs fixados nele. Quando uma corrente elétrica é aplicada ao estator, ela cria um campo magnético que interage com os ímãs do rotor, fazendo-o girar. O rotor giratório é o que move as rodas do hoverboard.

Shane Chen inventou a primeira scooter com autoequilíbrio, originalmente por ele denominada hovertrax, que ficou conhecido como hoverboards. Em fevereiro de 2012, um pedido de patente provisória foi depositado para o Hovertrax. A patente foi concedida em 2014. O Hovertrax foi lançado ao público em 2013.
2013 - Campanha no Kickstarter
Shane Chen lançou uma campanha de arrecadação de fundos no Kickstarter em maio de 2013 co a proposta de um "transportador elétrico com autoequilíbrio e tecnologia giroscópica. Mude o peso do corpo para controlar a velocidade e a direção para um deslizamento perfeito!"
